So my boyfriend and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary last Saturday. See photo evidence below:
Basically we went into Ann Arbor and stayed the night at a hotel and had a nice dinner and drank. Mini-mini vacation! But how does this relate to this blog? Well, my boyfriend, lets call him, ProcerusQuodMacresco or PQM for short, found a fun activity for us. We ended up seeing a free concert put on by UMS and featuring the Michigan Chamber Players.
They were playing a piece by the composer Arnold Schoenberg called Pierrot Lunaire.

The Composer Attends to his Ping Pong Game
Schoenberg based the composition around a set of poems done by Belgian poet Albert Giraud (1860-1929).

I don't know...he seems stonefaced.
During the musical performance a vocalist spoke/sang the poems in German and they projected the English translation behind her. The poems were HILARIOUS. Here are some samples:
Night
Obscure, black giant moths
Killed the sun’s splendour.
Red Mass
His hand, annointed,
Rips up the priest’s vestments
…
The dripping red Host:
His heart-in bloodied fingers-
For a terrible Last Supper!
Incidentally, after this poem I leaned over to PQM and whispered, “this is so romantic,” and then the next poem flashed up on the screen:
Gallows Song
The withered whore
With stringy neck
Will be his last
Beloved.
In a word? Perfect. All joking aside though, the music was really beautiful and I do enjoy reading new poetry. And for free? How can you beat that?
